A head-up display
is a device which projects a virtual image of instrumentation on the windscreen
of a car which means that drivers do not need to adjust their usual viewpoint.
The image detail is taken from an image source and then the image is generated
in the HUD computer.
The image is reflected through a relay lens assemble and
is displayed on the collimator or a combiner. This image is visualized by the
driver on the windshield. It displays a variety of information to drivers such
as speed, turning signal information, high-beam indicator usage, radio status,
outside air temperature, compass direction, and a full assortment of warning
messages.
It could also be used to display any type of information that might
facilitate better driving. The advantage of the head-up display for the driver
is that it allows the driver to maintain attention on the traffic ahead while
reading important operational parameters in the same line of sight. There is no
need to look down at the dashboard or elsewhere, hence no focal adjustment of
the eyes is required. Analysts forecast the Global Automotive
Heads-up Display market will grow at a CAGR of 44.13 percent over the
period 2013-2018.
