Dimethyl Ether (DME), also known as methyl ether, is a colourless
non-toxic gas which is easy to liquefy and transport. DME is a clean
energy source that can be manufactured from various abundant sources
including coal, biomass, and natural gas. It has a great potential for
use as an alternative for transportation fuel. In addition, it is also
used in power generation and domestic applications like heating and
cooking. Analysts forecast the Global Dimethyl Ether market will grow at a CAGR of 10.99 percent over the period 2013-2018.

Recently,
AB Volvo, the world's largest manufacturer of commercial vehicles, has
stated that DME could be a better option for future fuel. Volvo has
developed a DME fleet in collaboration with the European Union in
Sweden. The DME-powered trucks operate as ultra-clean low-emission
transport vehicles throughout the country. A similar pilot program in
Sweden has been undertaken through a commercial collaboration between
Martin Transport Inc., Volvo, and Oberon Fuels Inc. Nissan has also
developed a compression ignition engine truck fuelled by DME. Volvo has
already brought second-generation DME gas engine trucks to the market.
Thus, DME could be an alternative energy to LNG as a transportation fuel
and it is expected that it will be more economical for long distance
driving.
This report covers the present scenario and the growth

According to the report, the Global DME market is driven
by several factors (both on the demand and supply side), of which the
growing demand for DME in China is one of the major drivers. China is
the single largest consumer and producer of DME, contributing more than
90 percent of the global demand, and is expected to continue to dominate
the Global DME market in the future. The DME market in China has
changed dramatically, with many new projects.
Further, the report
states that one of the major challenges is the strong competition with
existing fuels. Although DME is the most promising fuel, it has tough
competition with diesel and other existing fuels such as LPG, gasoline,
kerosene, and hydrocarbons.
