About Automotive Torque Converter A torque converter allows a vehicle engine to spin independently of the transmission. When the engine turns slowly (for instance when the vehicle is idling at a traffic signal), the amount of torque passing through the torque converter to the transmission is small; however, it requires light pressure on the brake pedal.
