Taiwanese Mobile Phone Industry 2Q 2016: Taiwanese Branded Vendors Delaying New Product Shipments Until 2H 2016

The Taiwanese smartphone shipments reached around 86.0 million units in the first quarter of 2016, down 23.1% sequentially, according to the report The Taiwanese Mobile Phone Industry, 2Q 2016, a Taipei-based ICT research institute. "The sequential decline was attributed to the sluggish iPhone shipments and the delayed launch of Taiwanese branded vendors' flagship products. Overall, due to the lack of growth momentum from both branded vendors and contract manufacturers, the Taiwanese smartphone industry's full-year shipment volume is projected to reach 356.4 million units in 2016, down 5.4% year on year."

Looking specifically at HTC, the company - which solely focused on smartphones in the past - has diversified into cameras, smart wristbands, and VR (Virtual Reality) headsets. Since 2015, the company's marketing focus has centered on VR devices. As for smartphone, HTC 10 was launched one month later than competitors and therefore lost some advantages. For the Chinese market, HTC rolled out HTC 10 Lifestyle, which is a downgraded version of the regular HTC 10 at a similar price point. Overall, the sales of HTC 10 and HTC 10 Lifestyle were sluggish. Despite its efforts to boost sales with diverse product mix, HTC's product sales however will slip further in 2016.

The Taiwanese Mobile Phone Industry, 1Q 2014 Report

This research report presents mobile phone shipment volume forecast and recent quarter review of major Taiwanese contract manufacturers.

The report includes major contract manufacturers’ shipment volume and value, ASP, manufacturer volume ranking, customer ranking, shipment by maker, and price trend. Also provided are shipment breakdowns by system technology, operating system, display, panel size, and production location.

The content of this report is based on primary data obtained through interviews with Taiwanese mobile phone industry contract manufacturers. The report finds that the shipment volume of Taiwanese contract manufacturers soared in the fourth quarter of 2013, driven mainly by the increased market demand for iPhones toward year-end.

Apple’s iPhones continues to take the lion’s share in Taiwanese makers’ shipment, followed by Xiaomi and Sony in the fourth quarter of 2013. It should be noted that LTE models constituted over 70% of total contract manufactured mobile phone shipments in the fourth quarter of 2014, up from around 52.6% in the third quarter.

The Taiwanese contract manufacturers’ mobile phone shipment volume, though peaked in the fourth quarter, is forecast to have subdued in the first quarter of 2014 and will not see appreciable growth until iPhone 6 launch in the second half of 2014.
